Rochester Area Math Science Partnership
Over twenty years ago, local leaders from the Rochester School District, Mayo Clinic, and IBM came together to form a partnership to encourage and support math and science in the school district. Since then RAMSP has grown to include three institutions of higher education, workforce development, and 13 area school districts. The partnership provides educational support and services to over 31,000 students and 1,900 teachers in an area covering more than 2,800 square miles in southeast Minnesota.

Science & Math Forums, November 1, 2011
Presentations from Nov. 1 Science and Math Forums are available under the Articles & Resources button to the left!
A recent initiative by the RAMSP Science and Math Committees is a series of periodic forums that bring together teachers across our region for an evening of sharing and exposure to new strategies, both for individual courses and for a school's curriculum broadly. On November 1, 2011,RAMSP hosted parallel forums for science teachers and math teachers, the latter for the first time. More than 170 educators attended, representing all grade levels, and among them were 25 future teachers enrolled at Winona State's Rochester campus, more than half of whom are likely to teach in our area after they graduate. The two groups shared a keynote speaker, Michael Lindstrom from SciMathMN, who presented on Frameworks for Education Standards. Michael walked the educators through online resources. A link to his PowerPoint presentation is available under the Articles & Resources button.
After dinner, which was offered to teachers in RAMSP school districts at no charge, the science educators broke into smaller groups and used laptops to explore the Frameworks website together. The math educators adjourned to an auditorium to receive two presentations. "MCA III Math Results – What do we do now?" was the focus of Sue Wygant, Math Specialist with the Minnesota Department of Education. She shared thoughts and ideas about using the MCA III results as a basis for actions to improve student outcomes. Her PowerPoint presentation and a related Math Standards document are available under the Articles & Resources button.
The evening concluded with "The Reverse Learning Classroom/Byron Innovations," presented by Byron High School math teachers Troy Faulkner and Rob Warneke. They shed light on the exciting revolution of their "flipped" math education format that has recently earned the district national recognition of Intel's School of Distinction Award for High School Math. Under the Articles & Resources button is a link to slides excerpted from a presentation in which they took part, for Intel and Tech & Learning.
The RAMSP Science and Math Committees plan to offer more forums during the second half of the school year. Both committees surveyed attendees for evaluations of the November 1st event and suggestions for future forums. The Math Committee will reach out soon to the ten new volunteers who responded to the Committee's request for assistance with planning these events.
